English and Chinese Exchange Corner

Every Sunday 11am-1pm, young volunteers (from local high schools) come to our centre to teach English, helping the new Chinese immigrant speakers overcome their language barriers and improve their day-to-day life. At the same time the Chinese speakers in exchange and will teach them how to speak Chinese. All the young volunteers can gain working experience as an English teacher. This project provides both students the educational opportunities to learn both English and Chinese languages.

Our Centre will mentor the whole project and provide rooms, programmes, materials; organise paper work and go between the Communities and High schools for volunteers. Everyone is welcome to join in our project regardless of their ethnic backgrounds or cultural group. Our staff and adult volunteers will help and guide these children to achieve their goals of our project.

This project can benefit young people or teacher training
This new group of Chinese new immigrants are socially isolated and lack informal support by the City Council, they are facing a difficulty with employment and are materially disadvantaged. They are not eligible for any social benefit or to enter for the National ESOL course. We would like to encourage our young volunteers to spend their time for a good cause and support the lives of people who are struggling to cope with their day-to-day life, or help young immigrants to settle in with their schoolwork. This project provides opportunities for young people to improve their Community Spirit, reduced isolation, increased voluntary and community group activity. Caring for others in return gain good knowledge of Languages, self-confidence, communication skills and abilities, which are open their future job market.

This project will promote understading and tolerance by bringing people from all walks of life together to share one aim - caring for each other and sharing the success with our communities and volunteers. Volunteers work and learn from this project and their contribution to this project is our success.

This project is suitable for ESOL English Language Teacher (teacher certificate) to join in as their part of practical training. 英語訓練課程
