Art

It makes you feel proud of us

Art plays a significant role within Chinese culture. Our successful workshops promoting Chinese calligraphy and painting have been extremely well received in local schools. Our workshops give the children the chance to immerse themselves in Chinese culture whilst maintaining a strong level of creativity.

Dance

We also embrace the arts within our centre. Our dance group, founded in 1998, has performed at many local events and Chinese celebrations. We offer many dance classes within our school, varying from the foundation steps and skills required by a beginner to the high-skill classes for those covering some themes as classical Chinese dance. Dance is a great way to keep fit as well as encouraging active participation in other aspects of Chinese culture and heritage.

The Butterfly Lovers 2005

This was our first production by the local Chinese community organized by Jenny Wong. The music was adapted from “Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto” by Ho Zhan Hao and Chen Kang, and performed by the Manchester Chinese Local Orchestra, dancers and musicians.

“We are an overseas Chinese community, and have lived in both eastern and western societies, with the opportunity to appreciate the essential components of both types of culture. We are proud to be Mancunian Chinese, living in a city that has changed greatly in the past 20 years to become a modern, multicultural, multiethnic city.” Jenny Wong said, “We have been lucky to know an enthusiastic group of people well-versed in Chinese culture, with a great love of their heritage. They have been an inspiration by taking on the challenge of organizing this concert in the hope that this one small event may contribute to the wider promotion of Chinese culture, and in building, from music and dance, a bridge between different culture and languages.”

Music 音樂

Music is important within all cultures, and we embrace this belief at our centre. We believe that we can unite cultures through music and art. We offer piano and other classical Chinese instrument tuition at our centre helping many students to improve their skills.

Manchester International Music Festival 2007

In July 2007 we took part in the Manchester International Music Festival with our own adaptation of Monkey: Journey to The West. Our students of all ages took part in this project combining all of their skills in dance and music to create a truly memorable production. A DVD and CD were produced to mark a true achievement from all those involved.

We have run these workshops since 2005 and initially these workshops were funded by the Manchester Impact Fund. Through this project we have been building great contact with local schools. After the funding came to end, we continued to deliver a fun, unique and creative Chinese Art and Culture Workshop that was extremely well received in schools. Our Chinese workshops are now running in community centres, schools and sport centre.

Staff are CRB-checked and insured. All income from the workshops has been used to support our Charity’s overhead.

Routes into Languages Project in 2008

During 2008 we worked closely with Manchester Metropolitan University, The University of Salford, The University of Bolton, UCLan and The University of Manchester in support of the “Routes into Languages Project”. This venture has served most of the North West, working within high schools and universities.

The aim of the project is to encourage young people to engage with foreign languages, as well as highlighting the significance of a multicultural society. By means of promotional activities we intend to enhance awareness of young people in foreign language professions, as well as generating wider appreciation of interpreting and the widening market of employment.
